What We're Here to Do

He is 17
Doesn’t know if he can bear the stones he’s always thrown
Absorbing bigotry
Just wants to be a kid but bullying decays his soul
What can we do to show him that his life’s worth living?
What can we do to show him that he’s beautiful?
What can we say to tell him that it does get better?
How can we make sure that he will not end it all?

On stage he wants to sing
Called sissy, queer and freak
Daily he cries, «The world’s so mean!»
In church he feels the sting
Deliverance they preach
He thinks, «God, why do you hate me?»
What can we do to show him that he has a purpose?
How can we tell him he’s fine just the way he is?
How can we share the light when Sundays in our sermons
We’re more concerned about condemning false taught sin?

I thought we were conscious
Where is our conscience?
We should be cautious spreading pain in place of love
Stop all the nonsense
It’s making me nauseous
Use common sense and know the world really needs

But in practice, we fall short
