Long Time

it takes a long time to learn to speak
your lips and lungs and throat and tongue start off so weak
and it takes even longer to learn what not to say
so i guess i’ll have to wait
'cause it takes a long time to fall asleep
to stretch your arms out and bend your knees
and it takes even longer to wake up every day
so i guess i’ll have to wait
'cause it takes a long time to learn to walk
so you celebrate your locomotion with shoes and socks
and it takes even longer to know just when to stop
so i guess i’ll have to wait
you pull me in with all those pretty lights
i pull away and cover up my eyes
'cause i won’t stay to fight a losing fight
i’ll move away from any dog that bites
and i’m okay with being by myself
and i’m okay with drinking to my health
and i can’t say just what i would’ve changed
all these things just have to be this way
it takes a long time to learn to live
to eat and breath and dance and sing and love and kiss
and there’s no way to know just where to go from here
so i guess i’ll have to wait
because it takes a long time.
