Residential Weather

On the coldest winter night
The neighborhood ignites
The chimneys and porch lights
All those signs of life
The neighbors come and go
The ones I like and the ones I don’t know
Turn off the phone
Sometimes I just don’t want to know
That the wheels are turning, fires burning
Thinking about how other people live
Cars pass by and I think you’re home
I get myself together
You’ve been feeling the winter swell
Adjusting to the weather
I walk around at night
The tops of heads and the bedroom lights
Hitchcock moments
The definition is so high
I put a fence in my yard to keep things in and out
Shadows from the passing headlights
Flickering inside from the television
Cars pass by and I think you’re home
I get myself together
I’ve been fleeting and catching hell
Adjusting to the weather
The cold outside is too much for me
Inside my house is where I can breathe
And there’s nothing ever on TV
Just the air outside
