Useless Captain

As water drips on my face
and wakes me from bad sleep
the heat and moisture hurt my bones
but I’m awake
I am aware
aware until there is no
awareness left for me to speak of
its absence my almighty pillow
its strength my numbing guiding light
and as my feet all soaked and weary
tread upon this scary wreck
I find myself a brave explorer
searching for what’s left to eat
I pride myself in being patient
in seeing this as an opportunity
to free myself from what I’ve caused
my lack of skill
and then return in proud applause
to tell my story
to share its thrills
