Thunderstorm

i took the river parkway to the county
and a calmer state of mind
it’s quiet in the kitchen now
but i remember the time
my grandfather sang old army songs
while his brain was going bad
and i told him i was talking again
with that girl i wish i had
now he’s a folded flag on a piano lid
in a living room where i played as a kid
and i think of him, like i think of her,
every day
but across the table
jeramiah looked at me straight in the face
he said «you can’t get stuck,
no you can’t stay in that negative space.»
so i’m living and i’m learning
let the layers burn away
and i’ll meet you on a park bench
after months of rain
i just wish the thunderstorm stayed overhead
a little longer
i want to get pushed around
yeah tonight i’m feeling darker
