On a Friday afternoon
When the spring air is warm and it smells so sweet
In the hall with the lights festooned
Honeysuckles all in bloom
They’re gonna have themselves a dance
All the children in the doorway crowd up
They stand on their tippy toes
Just to catch a glimpse of Miss Sarah’s dress
Charlie only has to look to give up
Him in his ratty clothes
He doesn’t stand half a chance

They get their backs up off the wall
All the couples pair up and take a bow
Charlie’s pacing cause he’s far too bashful
Sarah she’s on the floor
He may have missed his only chance
He winds up drinking with the boys out back
He takes a sip and then he passed the bottle back
Swallows all his pride enough to try again
At the moment when the band it strikes up
He gently holds out his hand
