Quicksand

It isn’t easy growing up when you’re afraid of sinking down
Suffocating, anticipating
A deep hole in the ground
Full of quicksand
I thought the wicked twisting fingers of a stormy summer sky
Or the monsters in the water would be likely way to die
But the danger that consumed me was the thought of drowning dry
Beneath the quicksand
Falling into quicksand
Well I am older, none the wiser, but I overcame the dread
To discover that the fury would ever rage within my head
And I worry over failing in my marriage, in my muse
About the father and the mother I am terrified to lose
I am scared of cruel leaders and a world gone up in flames
And the very troubled neighbors
And the consequence of pain
And it feels like quicksand
Falling into quicksand
