Heat Wave

The sun runnin' up her neck
To the range of her back
With every sign, the highway home
Speaks to me like a line upon my palm
It’s not my fault
I’ve never been good with distance
It won’t be my home
Ever again
Past the church
Birds nest in the hollow of the cross
Now the sun gives in
Now the coterie picks up
And as I wait for Katherine
All down the street, I hear
The screen door singin'
To the evening wind
We walk back down
The hill is an angled vigil
I look back out
Over the bridge
I don’t need it now
Seein' that it used to say somethin'
Somehow I just can’t recount
But I don’t mind
Maybe that’s gonna change someday
