Devil and the Knight

A victorious knight on a battlefield, he prayed for an ale most dear
But he was remiss through the prayer address, so it fell to the Devil’s ear
Through thunderous sky, he did arrive
With cloven hoof and beard
But the knight, he stayed, and his soul betrayed
For the Devil brought him beer
Well he sold his soul for a cup of ale
And the Devil was filled with glee
'Cause the ugly truth, though we have no proof
Is in Hell they just serve tea (oh, no!)
Well, the Devil said, «Fine warrior, pray, have a pilsner to quench your thirst
'Tis the finest beer from the Prussian lands, but I must be reimbursed
So at your end, your soul I’ll rend
From the front of Heaven’s Gate
To Hell, we’ll turn, and there, you’ll burn
And thus will be your fate.»

So the knight he took this German drink and pounded it in one sup
With a mighty slurp and a thundrous burp, he tossed the empty cup
Well the Devil howled, and the skies he fouled
With sadistic song of fear
«Good knight, farewell, I’ll see you in Hell,»
And with that he disappeared
Having sold his soul for a cup of ale

As many years had passed away, the knight in battle died
And thus his fate, at the Pearly Gate, was the Devil at his side
But Saint Pete was there, to make him aware
That the Devil’s plot would fail
For the catch was this, that German piss
Could hardly pass for ale
