Katherine's Chant

In darkness, I’m buried, in sorrow and despair.
The silence, awareness sharpened, I see the seconds dragging by.
Clenching the fingers tightly, counting remaining rounds.
I pray for my woman and my child.
I smell the fear around me, embraced in leather bounds.
I hope my body’s never found.
The foe is never sleeping, I see them crawling near, Biting their time,
collecting forces.
Aiming for swift surrender, no going back. We fight till death or we stack
corpses.
Fight! Kill! I feel my demons rising.
Load. Aim. I see them flow by the horizon.
No sound, not even whispers. Fear silenced by control.
As I exhale, rasping air. I aim my gun and take a soul.
Brothers falling, flesh is scorching, blood is swallowed by hate.
Into the slaughter, into the fire, I’m still here, so hell can wait!
Hands, frozen, and yet I live and yet I kill.
Heart, pounding, I fight with iron will.
Commander shouting, retreat. Time to give the torch to Kate.
Engines roaring, she’s taking aim. A single note will be played.
Her chant of roaring madness, rendering might, A soldiers delight.
They will forever witness, demonic chant, little Kate is our light.
Heads, splitting, their sorrow speaks in foreign tongues.
Kate, singing, leave my brothers alone!
Skinless bodies, remain. All the colors of war.
