I asked my dad how did he quit smoking

Half smoked cigarette, he left laying by his tools
He said I couldn’t have been more than nine or ten
When I looked at him with a cat eating grin, and said

I did my best to step in every footprint daddy made
I’d stretch my legs as far as they’d go
Chase after him and say

Six weeks shy of twenty-one
Daddy called and said I got some bad news son
