At half past eleven
With everyone in bed
All sleeping peacefully
With no clue what lay ahead
One by one the socks arose
They slithered out of drawers
And under chairs and down the stairs
And out of the front doors
They came out of the houses
Slipping down the street
Marching over sidewalks
Sliding without feet
An owl on the lamppost
Saw the socks roll past
Slinking into the dark woods
Creeping through the tall grass
They came into a clearing
With a hundred blinking fireflies
All the shoeless socks
Underneath the starry skies
There was waltzing and tango
Two-step and mambo
It was one for all and all for one

Said the little nighttime birdie
As she perched upon a branch
«They must be getting dirty»
How they skipped and danced
They marched out of the woods
And headed for the beach
Over the hills, over the sand
And finally out of reach
One by one they inched along
Closer to the sea
Tired now they made no sound
Those argyles, stripes and tweeds
They crawled toward the gangplank
Across the wooden docks
They went aboard the giant ship
Those many, many socks
And all around the world
They sailed on a cruise
Forever to be free
Of toes and of shoes
And if by chance you see them
You might not believe your eyes
All the shoeless socks
Underneath the starry skies
