I had been asleep for days
In a metal tube between the trees
Dreamed I saw father’s face
On each and all the leaves
I visited him in a nursing home
The same place I’d been born
Told him I would steal a car
He told me there were no pyramids on Mars
Under a highway overpass
I fell down on the grass
I sniffed and smeared the carbon track
Chlorophyll and an oily mass
A fool came running through the rust
He told me why I’d always lost
I asked him how he got his scars

I woke up on an abandoned path
A lock of hair and a subway map
A payphone rang with a nervous laugh I answered it so fast
A familiar voice wouldn’t give a name
Told me things would always be this way
Death’s the thing between the stars
