The Harbor

The sky above was glowing with the wind out on the wires
But our feet were going across the city blocks
Over and across to the middle of the night
With no time to hold us back

I hold it for a moment and leave it on the edge

What I was is over and the sun is out again
The sun is out again
I’m surrounded by the movement of the factories at dawn
Of the factories at dawn
Steel ships in the harbor and the shoreline is drawn
Upon a page upon a song that I am singing to myself
As I walk the city blocks over and across
To the bottom of the well
Where I gather up the tide and bring it back to you
For you to find the water rolling in
And the boys out on the docks
Skipping years and skipping rocks
To reach the setting sun as it sits upon the waves,
As it sits out on the waves
I held the camera tight, I wish I could have held your hand
I wish I could have held your hand
And looked into your eyes at the miracle we made
At the miracles that wait here near the harbor
Of the city where we met, of the city where we stayed
The one that time took away
Where you raised the boys alone, where the wind cuts to the bone
To the harbor we would go; the church and cobblestone
The parish on the strand, the lighthouse and the sand
Where we made this little home by the water
