I miss you already
Oh when will this shit end?
This week’s felt like twenty
Even when I’m out dancing with friends
Thinking: Why aren’t we doing this together?
It’s Friday night
Are you working late with that lecherous professor?
You’re bushy tailed and bright
Or are you playing pool
With some pals from school
I only met by mistake

I stayed over but the house didn’t shake
And was that the morning
When I suddenly turned into a frog

You’d surely choose the dog
And he could be the new king of your apartment
Giving kisses and hugs
And he could lie on the floor of the bathroom
When you’re in the tub
And you’d feel guilty, sure, when you left him all day
Like the times you couldn’t see me
But I’m a grown ass man
And all I wanted was some simple courtesy
Why would you say things like:
'You're the best thing that’s happened since I moved here'
It’s been two years and I know this town can be awful
But I took that to mean something more I feared
But then you started switching up your tenses
'I feel' became 'I felt'
And instead of putting up defences
I let it leave a welt
And when you thought you were laying down the law with me
You just seemed like a confused kid
Who thought that he was speaking from the heart
It doesn’t matter now but maybe it did
It was so exciting
Awash in new love’s possibility
And it looked like we wanted some of the same things
It’s just that you didn’t want them with me
