Speciesism

we create a gulf
between us and them
within which we pour
our rationalising,
(A meat eater might say -)
«that our lives are worth
a thousand fold
They facilitate a service
incapable of feeling»
(or)
«simply born for food
to dumb to be aware»
vague religious references
incorrect nutritional facts
failed attempts at arguments
we drew lines in the sand
arbitrary and on demand
designating what is «food»
what is «slave» and what is «pet»
the ruling that we set —
that animals must have a point
serve a purpose to their masters
whilst we live out pointless lives
with fervent self importance
when did we crown ourselves
overseers of their fate?
Speciesism permits
us to disregard emotion
It belittles and objectifies
those unable to dissent
to prostitute their bodies
to suffer indignant deaths
to bleed their lives away
to satisfy a taste
the same rule of thumb
applies to generations
who considered some inhuman
based on the colour of their skin
