The Gift

folk songs on my first guitar, summer afternoon
California sun outside, England in my room
arch top in a pillowcase underneath my bed
toughen up my fingertips, the walrus in my head
I was long gone, so many nights
with the same song, but something’s not right
it’s all that I am, it’s the thing that I do
it’s a gift I was given but I never knew that
the thing I was missing was someone to sing to

three sets in a smoky bar, splittin' up the door
riding in a rusty van, sleeping on the floor
make some people happy, touch a few hearts
all those years of practice and now the real show starts
