Street That I Grew Up On

we’d climb across the barbed wire
and feed them sugar cubes
we would run through the grass
we were barefoot and crazy
on the street that I grew up on
on a road lined with orange blossoms
I used to ride and my bike would
take me anywhere that
I could ever dream
I was Superman I was peter pan
on the street that I grew up on
turn the pages of yesterday and it’s all
a part of what we became
climbing trees chasing tumbleweeds
there’s a place that we all belong
it’s called the street that I grew up on
Louisiana swamplands,
alligators in the backyard
California canyons full of
sage and red claystone
it’s a wonder we grew up at all
angels watching over
the street that I grew up on
dodge ball on the asphalt
red rover in the sunshine
pictures in the clouds and
lemonade stands
they can tear down the house
they can build another highway
but the street it is never gone
not the street that I grew up on
on the street that I grew
you know my heart is always home
