Family Tree

Well she said her goodbyes to her home and her family
Not much more than a child
And her mama stood by with her tears in her handkerchief
Seemed she could still feel her moving inside
Her daddy, he held her with all of his might
Praying to God she’d be all right
It’s hard to leave the family tree
And find your way out in the sky
Where the roots of love and the boughs above

Well the dust of the gravel road settled on the highway
As the chevy drove into the sun
And her mama stood still propped up by the fence post
Holding her breath til her baby was gone
Frozen in time reliving the years
Straddling the line between faith and fear
It’s the people you’re from that give you the courage
To freefall into the unknown
And the people you’re from that give you the strength
To stand there in silence and watch as they go
