Angels Fly Away

there’s something in his smile
to make me stop and talk a while
when I would usually just past by
I handed him a couple bucks
and he struck a conversation
heaven knows just why
we’d talk about jesus
and sweet by and by
and he talked about heaven
with a tear in his eye
and he said angels are precious things
love them while you got them
try to find all those words way down
in the bottom of your heart

because sometimes angels fly away

I stopped to see how he was
I would give him that buck or two
I told him since we spoke that
I had been thinking about my folks
all the years and how they felt
started calling home more and
going back to visit
buying a hotdog on sundays
treasure every minute

that old charlie died
someone else was at his spot
with a card board sign
I wounder if he knew just how much he knew
