In a quiet little town where there’s nothing goin' down ‘cept the price of grain
I learned to read and write, and that it wasn’t really work if there wasn’t any

When I made it through school, thought that knew all that there was to know

Unless you open up your soul to the lessons on the radio
Down a long dirt road in an '87 Ford, it was a damn hot day
I didn’t realize then but I knew just the same, I wasn’t bound to stay
With the windows down, wind blowin', the sound of the rock n roll
Playing on the radio oh so many years ago
Well all the guys are downtown, ready and a rarin' to go
They’re all three drinks closer to findin' a girl to take home
But me, I want the open road, the night sky, and a radio
I always dreamed of a faster life in a city that was far away
Said I’d leave this goddamn town for a chance to be rich someday
Now that it’s been ten years in the grind, suits and ties and overcoats
I’d just rather play it slow, I don’t need nowhere to go
I’d be lyin' if I told ya that I didn’t think of different times
Where a sky full of stars meets the top of the bluffs and the pines
Where the mighty Mississippi rolls to the dreams on the radio
