Love and War

Before bed I’d read them the letters
Though they could not understand
I seem to hear your voice coming through them
Oh I was so excited to see you
And knew what I was gonna wear
Picked my outfit out for months before
LORD help me I have tried
Tried to stand before you
But you’re not of the same mind
That carried me to our bed
And I look so hard right at you
For some sign that you’re coming back
I went to fight, gave it all I could
For the common man, for the common good
But what I actually did was unspeakable
The man I was is far from sight
Too many wrongs can’t make a right
I don’t want to ruin your memory of me

Tried to stay alive
For the sake of my bride
And the wee ones at home
But now I can’t shut my eyes
Because then I see it all again

Tried to relieve you
I left the rope tied
And the chair in the corner by my bed
I don’t want to live
But I can’t leave you
