Playing the Part of Me

It’s the part I was born to play
Critics and fans agree
It’s the role of a lifetime
I’m so lucky that I’m
Playing the part of me
At first I tried to connect
With my character’s point of view
I was too busy to see,
Playing the part of me,
That you were playing the part of you
It’s all right here in the script
Hardly a thing can go wrong
When I just act out what the play’s about
David Mamet was right all along
I’m the luckiest guy in the world
It’s not every day that you’ll find
A playwright’s decision
To fashion his vision
With only one actor in mind
So, tonight I am living the dream
And I’d like to thank the Academy
I’d never thought I’d get
To set this statuette
Where everyone could easily see
That after all these years
To be honored by my peers
For my modest tour-de-force
It’s a total surprise, of course
Once I learned to do it
There was really nothin' to it
I’m a walking work of art
When I’m playing the part … of me!
