Painting Me Beautiful

Another break echoes through my being
I brush it over with happy colors before anyone sees
I’ve painted my surface with pictures of perfect
But a thousand cracks run just underneath
I feel them now, close to splitting me apart
I keep painting over and over but it bleeds through and
Just turns me dark
You whisper I was never meant
To play the artist’s part
You reach for me, gently, holding out your arms
And You take the paintbrush just as I let go (just as I let go)
You paint Yourself in the depths of my soul
Taking my broken and painting me
Beautiful
And I want to be clean before I dare
Approach the throne of grace
I don’t want You to see me when I look this way
But You say, «I did not create you to feel shame»
And I want you most at your most broken
But it’s not where I want you to stay
